Energy Medicine

You are probably asking yourself "What is energy medicine?"

In the past few years, the field of energy healing has pretty much exploded—but there’s a ton of confusion around it, too. What is it, exactly?  Let’s start with the definition: Energy medicine (or biofield therapies) is the act of being a conduit for or "channeling" if you  will,  and manipulating the energy that courses through your body in order to heal it. This can be done with hands-on practices, such as Acupuncture, Acupressure and Reiki, as well as sensory-based experiences, like the use of crystals, sound baths, aromatherapy,  Quantum Healing, Healing Touch, Qi Gong, Reflexology, Therapeutic Touchas well as others.  The following is a statement by Donna Eden, a respected author, teacher, and pioneer in the field of energy medicine. She has taught more than 50,000 people worldwide how to methodically and precisely direct energy for health and happiness, using methods akin to acupressure, therapeutic touch, and qigong.

"Energy runs through everyone, like electricity in a building. It keeps us moving, animating our muscles and bones and heart—everything. But unlike electricity, this life force has incredible intelligence. It is the foundation of all the body’s physical systems—the immune system, the respiratory system, the reproductive system, all of them—directing them in the amazing ways they keep us alive and thriving. The energy is far more intelligent than our brains. Energy medicine is the practice of tapping into this brilliant energy and mobilizing it for your health and well-being." ~ Donna Eden

Energy medicine is a branch of complementary alternative medicine based on the belief that energy healing therapists can channel life force energy to accelerate the natural healing process.  Energy healing is a holistic practice that uses life force energy to remove blocks and stimulate the body’s ability to heal itself. The energy healing therapist helps bring the client’s energy field into balance and improve the health and wellness of body, mind and spirit. Using energy medicine can help re-balance the body and improve well-being.

Energy Medicine Explained:

Energy medicine has been around for thousands of years—a description of the “laying on of hands” to relieve pain was found in an ancient Egyptian papyrus document from 1550 BC. But even with its long history, people find it hard to wrap their heads around energy medicine, says acupuncturist and Chinese medicine doctor Jill Blakeway, author of the recent book Energy Medicine: The Science and Mystery of Healing.

Yufang Lin, MD, an integrative medicine physician at the Cleveland Clinic who is trained in Reiki and qigong, explains to her patients that energy is the foundation for everything we do with our bodies. “The idea is that we have this bank of energy, and we have to restore it or replace it,” she says. “In Chinese medicine and Ayurveda, if the energy isn’t flowing well, we get sick.”  Many energy healers call these "energy blocks".

Dr. Judith Orloff, a well respected physician, a psychiatrist on the UCLA clinical faculty,  energy healer, and intuitive, says  "you can absolutely feel it" if you have picked up on a person with negative "vibes".  She says, "That’s when the energy of an interaction, or an event, lingers the next day when you wake up, and it literally feels like a hangover.”  Does any of this sound familiar?

“Energy medicine is the future of all medicine.”

What does Healing mean:

Healing is a fascinating process which is generally very poorly understood. Although it may be tempting to believe that we can heal other people, it is of utmost importance to realize that all healing is self-healing. The body has an extraordinary intelligence and ability to heal itself.  Given the right energetic, emotional, nutritional, and spiritual environments, the natural state of the body is perfect health. Many energy healers are individuals who were sick with a serious or fatal illness, and overcame the illness thru alternative means, or in combination with traditional medicine.

Although all healing is self healing, energy medicine practitioners can assist other people with their own healing process.

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is a healing energy that can only be channeled by the practitioner who has been attuned to it. Reiki is offered through light, non-invasive touch with the practitioner's hands placed and held on a series of locations on the head and front and back of the torso. Reiki can also be sent and received at a distance.

Reiki is the life energy that flows through all living things. A Reiki session can help ease tension and stress and can help support the body to facilitate an environment for healing on all levels – physical, mental, and emotional. We are alive because life force is flowing through us. Life force flows through the physical body through pathways called chakras, nadis, and meridians. It also flows around us in a field of energy called the aura. Life force can pass directly through the organs and cells of the body while nourishing the supporting them in their vital functions.  Reiki is a great tool for stress reduction and relaxation.

Who can benefit from Reiki?

Simply Put:   Everyone

Reiki can work on the physical, emotional and spiritual levels.  For people who are basically healthy, Reiki helps maintain the body’s natural balance and energy flow.  For those struggling with pain or other forms of “dis-ease”, Reiki reduces stress, fosters relaxation, and encourages the natural healing process.  People who receive Reiki often experience a speedier recovery after surgery, less side effects from medication, and a general sense of well-being.

What Happens During Reiki?

From a client’s perspective, some people have expressed that they felt energy moving down one side of the body through the feet. Some can feel it shoot and stop where they know they have a block, or feel a tingle and different sensations. Very often there is a visual experience. When someone goes into a meditative state, they will often see different relaxing colors form, as well as images of people or different things.

Often, clients will say that they feel heat coming from the palms of  the hands. Sometimes clients feel as if the hands are on several parts of the body at the same time.   There are times when a person may feel cold or a tension in the body release.  Many individuals feel so relaxed that they just sleep through it.
